Rocky is one of the most beloved films in American cinematic history. Released on November 21, 1976, the original Rocky earned ten Academy Award nominations and won three making it one of the most decorated sports films ever made. In 2006, the Library of Congress selected Rocky for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The Rocky and Creed franchise has grossed over $1.7 billion worldwide across nine films, making it the most successful sports movie franchise in history according to Guinness World Records. This story sells because of the story of Rocky Balboa, the nobody from Philadelphia who rose to become the people’s champion!

2026 is the most commercially significant year for the Rocky franchise since it launched, and the timing of this Cardsmiths trading card set is no accident. The 50th anniversary celebration is a year-long, multi-platform cultural event with enormous consumer visibility. The theatrical anchor is Rocky 50, a newly remastered 4K presentation of the original 1976 film, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Park Circus, and Fathom Entertainment, running in theaters nationwide from November 7–11, 2026. Audiences attending Rocky 50 will also receive an exclusive early look at I Play Rocky, the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios biopic directed by Academy Award winner Peter Farrelly and starring Anthony Ippolito as a young Sylvester Stallone. I Play Rocky opens in select theaters November 13 and wide on November 20, 2026 telling the true story of how Stallone refused to sell his Rocky script unless he could play the lead, the ultimate underdog story behind the ultimate underdog movie. The cast includes AnnaSophia Robb as Sasha Czack, Stephan James as Carl Weathers, Matt Dillon as Frank Stallone Sr., and Tracy Letts, and Jay Duplass.

Beyond the theatrical events, the 50th anniversary celebration spans live events, fan experiences, and cultural programming throughout 2026. RockyFest 50 in Philadelphia, home of the iconic Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is running through the summer and fall with outdoor festivals, fan meetups, runs up the Rocky Steps, film screenings with cast and crew appearances, guided tours of Rocky filming locations and more.

For retailers, what this means is straightforward: Rocky trading cards timed to this anniversary window will benefit from one of the most robust marketing campaigns of the year without a single dollar of additional spend. Amazon MGM Studios is spending to bring Rocky back to theaters.

The card content in the Cardsmiths Rocky 50th Anniversary set is designed to honor the full sweep of the franchise. The 108-card collector set includes 6 Movie Poster Cards spanning the six Rocky films, alongside scene and character cards that traverse the entire Rocky universe — from the original 1976 bout through Rocky IV’s Cold War drama to Rocky Balboa’s triumphant return. The insert lineup is as strong as any Cardsmiths set: 15 Gallery Edition cards in original illustrated art style, 14 Allies & Adversaries cards featuring Adrian, Mickey, Paulie, Apollo, and the full supporting cast, 8 Culture Shokz™ cards, 8 Ring Leaders cards featuring illustrated fighter portraits, and 7 Climactic Clashes cards capturing the franchise’s greatest fights in fight-poster format.
